Management in Search of Solutions to Problems
There are five categories of solutions to problems management. Be aware that some of these solutions can be combination of categories.
The categories for managing solutions are:
- Corrective – The premise of this solution is the correctiion of the problem. For example, if no one in the unit can perform at the standard set forth by the manager. Obviously, the standard is too high. The Corrective Solution is to lower the standard. The corrective solution is the true solution.
- Adaptive – This solution accommodates the situation. I have a house full of animals. I designed the house for easy cleaning.
- Interim – My favorite. Seriously, it is designed to be a short term solution. The reason I say it is my favorite, is because I practice continued improvement. Therefore, 99% of the time, you will improve your status quo, rendering the solution you thought was corrective, as temporary.
- Contingency – Here is a “What if” solution. What if it will rain? Solution – carry an umbrella with you. This solution is contingent upon rainy weather. It is used in business continuity issues. What is the office building is unavailable? Like during a hurricane.
- Preventive – Another name for this solution is “Problem Avoidance”. Don’t want to gain weight? Don’t eat as much.
