Foolproof Receipe for Problem Solving
Here is a four-step method for problem solving and decision making.
While this approach is common sense, unfortunately it is not used consistently. When you incorporate this method into managing your business, you will become good at decision making and problem solving.
Step 1 – Isolate the problem. Isolate the problem from other problems and from the symptoms. For example, fever is a symptom, not the problem.
Step 2 – Develop solutions. Let your creative juices flow. Come up with as many solutions as possible. Do not discard any of them, yet. The more extensive your list of solutions, the better the chance of making a good decision.
Step 3 – Forecast the outcomes. For each of the solutions in step 2, forecast the outcome. Ask and answer, “What would happen if I choose this solution?”
Step 4 – Make a decision. Select the best option.
You must complete all four steps in order to become good at problem solving and decision making.
Two more points:
While coming up with a myriad of solutions, remember these do not enter into the decision process:
a. Solutions that were not thought of, and
b. Solutions outside the control of the decision maker.
